I Guess This is Why We Are Christians, huh?

By Brendan Armitage

Before he was killed, Jack Beaton, of Bakersfield, Ca., shielded his wife, Laurie, from gunfire, his family said.  His father-in-law, Jerry Cook, told BakersfieldNow.com that Mr. Beaton had covered his wife's body with his own, and was shot himself,  "He told her that he loved her," Mr. Cook said.  "Laurie could tell he was slipping.  She told him she loved him and she would see him in heaven."

NYT 10/3/17.

It's a noble story.  One that causes every guy who has a family to tighten his jaw and squint his eyes so that you won't see the tears welling up and the bobbing of his adam's apple.

But it's also the story intimately familiar to every Christian.  It's in Luke's Gospel. Chapter 12, verse 20.

"But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'

Why are you a Christian?  Because you know that life is not certain, that 85 years on this earth are not pre-ordained for you.

We know, in a place untouched by the secular world around us, that this is not the end for us.  We are God's unworthy servants here on this earth, for the time we may be on this earth, but we are not to find our rest here on this earth.

"We believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth..."

We have faith, unfazed by the power of 1,000 headlines, in the doctrine of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

This is the power given to us by our faith in God, through our Lutheran church, that we may stand unafraid in the face of any trial, trouble or torment.  We receive salvation, and that may not be denied by any mad gunman or little rocketman.

It is a sad day, a tragedy that boggles the mind and gives us pause.

But I refer back to Matthew 16:18

"And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."

Looking forward to reading your thoughts on this subject.
